Over the years, I've gotten a lot of emails and DMs from folks asking for my advice on leadership. I always seem to reference the same foundational principles, so I thought I would share what's been effective for me.

7 Traits Of A Highly Effective Leader

I’ve had the privilege of managing teams for the better part of 20 years.

Many people make the misconception that once you reach a leadership level of your career that you can throttle back, take the easy route, that you’ve “made it.”

That is so not the case.

Leadership means you are now responsible for the team’s successes, failures, actions, and behaviors.

Leadership means you actually lose the ability to stay in control of your desired outcome—you’re leaving it to others to execute.

Leadership means investing in each individual member of your team so you can collectively win and succeed.

So taking on a leadership role is commendable, but no easy task. First, you have to understand the type of leader you want to be, what you’re motivated by, and why you want to be one in the first place.

Next, you have to develop your leadership philosophy. How are you going to lead? What example are you going to set? How are you going to get your team to follow you?

Looking through this lens, here are seven traits that I’ve personally developed over the years of leading many teams through success and failure. When I fall back on these seven traits, I know they’ll always lead me in the right leadership direction.
